One shall continue
Just five months after Jagrati (Jags) Solanki started experiencing abdominal pain and bloating, she was lying in a hospital bed dying as her friends and family stood nearby praying for her. This compassionate fire-brand of a woman, who was known for her extraordinary baking skills and volunteerism at her children’s schools, passed away at the age of 43 from stage three ovarian cancer on Feb. 19, 2011.
"She was very tiny, but fierce," said her son Heeral.
The Solanki family, who lives in Elk Grove, has since become committed to ensure more people become aware of how this “silent killer,” ovarian cancer, whispers symptoms to women. To raise awareness and funds, her friends and family organized a golf tournament and gala. The annual event has raised $126,003 for UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center—one of only 41 centers of its kind in the country.
“In our culture, when we donate money, we never end the donation in a zero,” explained Jags’ husband, Udaysi Solanki. “The $1 shows it shall continue.”
